Richard
“Dick” Gerst, age 76 years of Temperance,
MI, died Tuesday, July 17, 2007 in his home.
Born April 30, 1931 in Toledo, OH, he was
the son of Samuel and Esther (Wagner) Gerst.
A US Army veteran of the Korean War, he
married Shirley Keller on June 18, 1952
in Toledo, OH . Dick graduated from Libbey
High School in 1949 and then received his
Bachelors of Business from the University
of Toledo . He was the owner and operator
of the former Temperance Ace Hardware for
over 10 years. Prior he was employed as
the Youth Director for West Toledo and Findlay
Y.M.C.A. He had also been the Executive
Director for the Boy Scouts of America.
He was also employed by the Lions Store
in Downtown Toledo. Dick was active in the
Toledo Turners in gymnastics and folk dancing.
He also spent several years coaching with
the Bedford Schools Track Teams. In his
earlier years, he had a Teen Town band and
was active in the Drum and Bugle Corp as
a percussionist.
Dick
is survived by his loving wife, Shirley.
Children, William Gerst of Temperance, MI
and Beth (Dane) Vollmar of Toledo, OH. Sister,
Theone Dreps of New Jersey. 3 grandchildren
and 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by his parents, daughter, Rebecca
Gerst and son, Robert Gerst.
Visitation
will be held Thursday from 2-9 pm at the
Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home, 1640 Smith
Rd. (at Jackman) Temperance, MI, where funeral
services will be held Friday at 10:00 am.
Interment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial
Par . Memorials may be made to the National
Parkinson Foundation.
